Former cabinet minister and senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Qazi Mohammed Afzal passed away at Sher i Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Friday evening.
“Qazi Afzal who was admitted in the ICU at the SKIMS breathed his last at 8 pm” Medical Superintendent SKIMS Dr Farooq Jan told Greater Kashmir.
According to family sources, Qazi Afzal, 80, was not keeping well for last few years and had been undergoing treatment in and outside the valley. He was shifted to SKIMS hospital on Friday, where he breathed his last, a family source said.
Qazi Afzal, a resident of Lar area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was a founding member of PDP and had successfully contested 2002 assembly elections from Ganderbal defeating his rival candidate Omar Abdullah, vice-president NC.
He was later inducted to cabinet and was forest minister in the PDP-Congress coalition government during 2002-08.
PDP besides many other political leaders have expressed grief over his demise.
