J&K Government initiates process to establish Shia Waqf Board

Srinagar, Sep 11: The government of Jammu and Kashmir has begun the process of establishing a Shia Waqf Board in the Union Territory, actively seeking comments and views from relevant stakeholders.

This initiative aims to create a dedicated board in accordance with Section 13 of the Waqf Act, 1995.

In a letter, Under Secretary to the Government, Sheetal Choudhary, reached out to the Commissioner of Survey and Land Records, requesting input on the formation of the board. The letter emphasises the importance of gathering feedback from experts and community representatives to ensure that the proposed board aligns with the specific needs and aspirations of the Shia community in J&K.

The government has also sought the views of National Conference’s Member of Parliament from Central Kashmir and prominent Shia leader, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, on the constitution of the Shia Waqf Board. This outreach to a key community leader underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive decision-making in this process.

The letter (No.REV/1/2024(7381594)) explicitly states: “I am directed to refer the above-captioned subject and request to furnish your views/comments regarding the constitution of Shia Waqf Board in the Union Territory of J&K, in light of section 13 of the Waqf Act, 1995.”
