3 back-to-back angioplasties performed at SMHS Hospital

Three patients with heart block were saved yesterday at SMHS Hospital, when doctors performed primary angioplasties on the patients within 15 minutes of reaching the hospital.

On Friday, cardiology department of SMHS Hospital carried out three back to back primary angioplasties, saving life and heart muscle of the patients, officials at the hospital said. 

   

“Two of the patients were in cardiogenic shock,” said the doctors. They said that although it was not rare to perform angioplasties at the hospital, however, they were able to achieve the “door to balloon time of 10 to 15 minutes”. 

“All patients are doing well,” said Dr Syed Maqbool, cardiologist at SMHS Hospital, who was part of the team.

Cardiologists at the hospital said, “SMHS hospital receives highest number of heart attack patients in J&K state and is equipped with latest facilities to deal with such cases”. They said that myocardial infarction (heart attack) was a common disease in Kashmir and could prove deadly.

“The most dreaded form of heart attack is when a patient develops  cardiogenic shock because of heart attack which requires immediate angioplasty(called primary angioplasty) to save a life,” said another doctor.

This procedure should be done as soon as possible preferably in first 90 minutes called door to balloon time after reaching hospital. The procedural team included Dr Syed Maqbool, Dr Manzoor Andrabi,  Dr Parvaiz Zargar, Dr Owais along with Tajamul ,Rafi Banday,Tahir,Owais,Irfan,Rohi,Muzaffar (Paramedical Cardiology Staff).
