Srinagar: Jammu University (JU) has invited applications for the post of the Vice Chancellor of the university days after the chancellor of the J&K universities approved the appointment of two separate search committees to draw a panel of the candidates for the appointment of new VC for the University of Kashmir (KU) and JU.
While the JU has issued a notification inviting the applications for the post, the notification is awaited from the KU administration.
As per the JU notification, the new VC to be appointed for the university should be the Principal Executive and Academic Officer of the university.
“Consequent upon the nomination of the Search Committee for the appointment of Vice-Chancellor for JU, applications are invited from eligible distinguished academicians with the following credentials for the consideration of the search committee,” reads the notice issued by Registrar JU, Prof Arvind Jasrotia.
The notification reads that the eligible candidate should be a person of the highest level of academic credentials, administrative competence, integrity, morals, and institutional commitment.
“The VC should be a visionary with proven leadership qualities as well as teaching and research. The credentials of the VC should be outstanding academic record throughout and a minimum of 10 years experience as a professor in a university system or an equivalent position in a reputed research and or academic administrative organisation,” it reads.
The notification states that the age of the applicant should not be more than 65 years as of the closing date of receipt of applications of advertisement which has been fixed as January 20, 2022.
The J&K government has constituted two separate search committees to draw a panel of candidates for the appointment of VC for KU and JU.
The three-year term of the incumbent VCs of both the universities expired this year.
Earlier, the tenure of a university’s VC was five years, which, however, was curtailed to three years after the Reorganisation Act came into vogue in J&K post abrogation of Article 370 from the Indian constitution.
For the first time in history, the tenure of a VC of a university was enhanced from three to five years by the government in 2015.
However, the decision did not apply for any VC of KU and JU due to the changes and amendments made in the University Act.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, KU Registrar Nisar Ahmad Mir said he was already on the job and the post would be advertised soon.
“I have approached the search committee to hold the preliminary meeting where the future course of action will be chalked out,” he said.
Former VC of Punjab University Prof Arun Kumar Grover has agreed to be the Chairman of the Search Committee as per Section 12 (2) (b) of Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969.
The members of the search committee for the appointment of VC for JU are VC Nagaland University Prof Pardeshi Lal and former VC Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, Prof Anil Kumar Tyagi.
Secretary General of the Indian Association of Universities Pankaj Mittal has been appointed as the chairperson of a search committee constituted for KU.
VC Jamia Millia Islamia New Delhi Prof Najma Akhtar and former VC of MANUU Prof Muhammad Miyan are the two members of the search committee.
