Jammu, Feb 15: Gandhi Memorial (GM) Camp College in Jammu recently hosted a lecture on the Syncretic Traditions of Sacred Architecture of Kashmir.

According to a press release Saleem Beg, Head of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) in Jammu and Kashmir delivered the lecture. The function was presided over by Vijay Bakaya, former Chief Secretary with Ashok Aima, former Vice Chancellor of Central University of Jammu, as the Chief Guest. Professor B L Zutshi, President of Hindu Education Society Kashmir, introduced the subject and the speaker in his opening remarks. He emphasised the importance of delving into the ancient history and spiritual traditions of Kashmir. Professor Zutshi commended the efforts of INTACH, led by Saleem Beg, in uncovering the harmonious and syncretic past of Kashmir, often referred to as the land of Sharda and Vitasta.

During the lecture, Saleem Beg presented a pictorial overview, highlighting aspects of ancient times that envisioned Kashmir as a sacred geography, a land created and blessed by Gods. He quoted numerous references from Sanskrit literature, underlining the sacredness attributed to the land. The audience gained insights into the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of Kashmir, exploring its syncretic traditions through the lens of sacred architecture. Rajatarangini, 12th century text, quotes NMP that it was the Sati, the consort of Lord Shankara, who on the prayers of Kashyapa and motivation of the Lord himself assumed the form of a river. This sacredness was carried forward and reflected in the Persian texts during the Muslim period as well, the press release said.
