Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said the silence maintained by Government of India on prevailing situation in Kashmir was “unfortunate”.
Talking to reporters on sidelines of a party functionMehbooba urged supporters and workers of all political parties to come togetherto send a message to the Government of India against any move to tinker withthe State’s special position.
“I want to tell workers of all political parties includingNational conference, Peoples Conference, Congress, People’s Democratic Frontand others to get united to send the message to government of India that wewill not accept any fiddling with J&K’s special position,” Mehbooba said.
She said recent developments in Kashmir including deploymentof additional deployment, advisory asking tourists and AmarnathYatris to leaveKashmir have created fear among people.
“It seems something is going to happen. The Air Force and theArmy have been put on high alert and it seems something is going to happen.People are worried but unfortunately Government of India has maintained silenceand hasn’t made any statement,” she said.
Mehbooba said if people of Jammu and Kashmir get united “nopower on earth can dare to fiddle with the state’s special position”.
Meanwhile senior PDP leaders appealed to the Prime MinisterNarendraModi to ensure that no unilateral decision was taken at any level thatimpinges upon constitutional arrangement of J&K in Union of India. In ameeting presided over by Mehbooba in Srinagar, top PDP leaders urged the PrimeMinister to give due consideration to the fact that people of the State havealways reposed faith in constitutional and democratic ethos of the country andany unilateral decision to alter the constitutional framework governing theState would be a “travesty”.
The party leadership hoped that the present dispensationheaded by the Prime Minister will respect the sentiments of people and theirviews on current situation.
The meeting was attended by party vice president, generalsecretaries and senior leaders.
