The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) Wednesday walked away with both the chairperson and vice-chairperson posts in District Development Council (DDC) elections in Anantnag.
The chairman seat for this district was reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.
Muhammad Yousuf Gorsi of the National Conference (NC) who had won from Pahalgam block was locked in horns with Sajida Begum, an independent candidate.
“All 14 DDC members participated in the election,” an official said.
He said Gorsi who got 11 votes to Begum’s 3 was declared victorious for the chairperson post. For vice-chairperson post, Advocate Sheikh Javaid of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was elected unopposed.
Of the 14 seats in Anantnag, six were won by NC, three each by Congress and independents, and two by PDP.
PAGD has now chairpersons in three districts of south Kashmir – Kulgam, Pulwama and Anantnag.
In Kulgam, the chairperson is from CPI (M) and vice-chairperson from NC.
In Pulwama, the chairperson is affiliated to PDP and vice-chairperson to NC.
In Shopian, JK Apni party bagged both the seats.
According to an official, the election process went on smoothly in presence of DPEO (Deputy Commissioner) Anantnag Anshul Garg.
“DPEO administered oath to both chairperson & vice-chairperson on the occasion,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC congratulated both and assured full support for achieving new heights of progress and development in the district.
