The brother-in-law of Hafiz Saeed, chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) has been arrested for hate speech and criticizing the Pakistan government, the police said on Wednesday.
Abdul Rehman Makki, who is the head of the JuD’s politicaland international affairs wing and in-charge of its charity armFalah-i-Insaniat (FiF), was detained during a crackdown by the government onoutlawed organisations, Geo News reported citing an Interior Ministry source.
Makki is accused of delivering a hate speech in Gujranwalaagainst the crackdown and criticizing the steps taken by the Pakistangovernment under the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidelines.
The FATF is an inter-governmental body which combats “moneylaundering and militant funding.”
Makki was arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order Actand shifted to a jail in Lahore, the report said. He was designated by the USin 2010 and consequently targeted by the US Treasury Department.
The crackdown on the outlawed groups was initiated by thePakistan government earlier this year under the National Action Plan. In March, Islamabad announced the freezing ofaccounts and seizure of assets linked to organisations banned by the UNSecurity Council. Within weeks, the government said it had taken control of 182seminaries and detained over 100 people as part of its push against proscribedgroups.
