Ramban, Apr 30:  The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained blocked for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

Senior Superintendent of Traffic Police, National Highway, Ramban, Rohit Baskotra late Tuesday evening said that the highway remained blocked for the second consecutive day on Tuesday. He said no fresh traffic was permitted from Jammu to Srinagar.

Baskotra said that some landslides were cleared and some stranded passenger vehicles stuck between Ramban and Banihal were permitted to move towards their respective destinations late Tuesday evening.

He said that the road restoration work was underway at the Magarkote area of Ramsu and Mehar area of Ramban.

Baskotra said that the road restoration work would likely be completed on Wednesday morning.

The highway was blocked following heavy downpours that led to multiple landslides triggered at various places between Banihal and Nashri in the Ramban district on Monday morning.

Due to the blockade of roads, hundreds of vehicles are stranded at Jammu, Udhampur, Qazigund, and Srinagar.

Officials said that after improvement in weather on Tuesday morning, the road maintenance agency, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), pressed its men and machinery into service to clear landslides at Dalwass, Mehar Cafeteria, Magarkote, Hingni, Gangroo, and other places.

They said that after a day-long road clearance operation, major obstructions and landslides at Hingni, Gangroo and other places were cleared and some stranded vehicles were allowed to move.

Meanwhile, traffic authorities late Tuesday evening said the highway was yet not restored fully. Restoration work is underway at Dalwass, Mehar and Magarkote.

They have advised commuters and vehicle operators to avoid journeys on the highway till the road is fully restored.
