Castigating the government for deferring assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, state Congress chief GA Mir Tuesday termed the decision undemocratic.
He said all political parties had urged the ElectionCommission of India to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously but”unfortunately the people were denied their democratic right”.
“People were expecting Assembly polls in June now but itseems they will defer them to November,” Mir told an election meeting inPulwama district.
“Not holding assembly polls will give a wrongimpression to people. Due to absence of public representatives people arefacing numerous problems in their respective areas,” said Mir at Town HallPulwama.
Mir is pitted against Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)president and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference (NC)candidate Hasnain Masoodi on Anantnag Lok Sabha seat.
Claiming that in the absence of an elected government, uncertainty in the state is deepening by the day and dissatisfaction amongpeople rising, Mir stressed that only effective response to this situationwould be holding assembly elections immediately.
It is expected that Election Commission of India might takea final call on holding Assembly elections this week.
Mir asked the people to vote for Congress for peace, stability and development of the state.
