Srinagar, Mar 22: As Kashmir observes the holy month of Ramadhan, a concerning trend has emerged – a sharp increase in the prices of essential commodities.
It has posed a significant challenge for residents, casting a shadow over Ramadhan observance in Kashmir
The price rise has been particularly pronounced in fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products, which are staples in the Ramadhan diet.
The cost of these items has surged, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford necessities during this crucial time.
Several factors have contributed to this price hike.
Supply chain disruptions, including transportation issues and restrictions on movement, have led to shortages in the market.
Additionally, increased demand during Ramadan has put further strain on the already limited supply, driving prices even higher.
Inflationary pressures have also played a role, as the overall cost of living continues to rise in Kashmir.
“The prices of essential items have gone through the roof this Ramadhan. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to afford necessities, especially for those with limited means,” said Muhammad Ramzan, a resident of Barazulla.
“The price rise has put a strain on our budget during Ramadhan. We are forced to cut back on essential items, which is affecting our ability to observe the holy month properly,” said Fatima Begum, a housewife in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district. “The authorities need to take urgent action to control prices and ensure that everyone can afford essential items during Ramadan. This is a matter of basic necessity and should not be ignored.”
Yasir Mir, a resident of Pulwama said, “The price rise has hit us hard this year. It’s disheartening to see the cost of items like fruits, vegetables, and meat soar, making it challenging to provide for our families during Ramadhan.”
Aisha Akber, a student from Kupwara said: “The authorities should step in to regulate the prices and prevent hoarding. Ramadhan is a time of community and sharing, but the current situation is making it difficult for us to fulfil our religious obligations.”
The rising prices during Ramadhan have added to the economic challenges faced by many in Kashmir. With the cost of living continuing to rise, there is an urgent need for sustainable solutions to address the issue of inflation and ensure that all residents can observe Ramadhan without undue financial hardship.
The residents are demanding stern steps to be taken by the government to address the issue, including monitoring prices and cracking down on hoarding and price manipulation.
However, these measures have had limited success in stabilising prices, and many residents continue to struggle with the high cost of essential items.
