The highway remained closed for vehicular traffic because of landslides and shooting stones triggered by rain and fresh snowfall on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel.

“The condition of the road is becoming worse with each passing day,” inspector general of police (traffic) Alok Kumar told Greater Kashmir.
He said that efforts are on to restore the 270-km highway, the only all weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the world.

Traffic officials said that hundreds of vehicles, including passenger taxis, which had left Kashmir for Jammu on Monday, are also stranded.
A report said that stranded passengers have been shifted to Jamia Masjid Magarkote and other residential areas between Ramban and Ramsu.

A large number of stranded passengers, reports added, bypassed the landslide hit area by crossing a stream by foot to reach their destination, while over 500 passengers were provided accommodation at various passenger sheds in Banihal on Monday night.
