In Shopian Diary: Chitragam’s water struggle, Dangerpora’s bridge peril, and Poshwari’s power cuts

Frequent power cuts irk Nullai Poshwari residents

Nullai Poshwari village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district is witnessing prolonged power outages, causing inconveniences to the residents.

According to the residents, the frequent unscheduled power cuts, which last for hours, have become a norm in the area.

“The area always experiences recurring power cuts, particularly with the onset of winters,” said Nazir Ahmad, a resident.

He said that a new transformer was installed around four months ago, but it was yet to be made operational.

The residents said that it was very unfortunate that despite paying their power bills on time they had to face unscheduled power cuts.

They said that the students had to bear the brunt of the erratic power supply.

“They could not study till late in the night in the absence of power cuts,” the residents said.

They appealed to the authorities to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the area.

Damaged Mool Dangerpora bridge posing threat to commuters

A damaged bridge in Mool Dangerpora is posing a threat to commuters in the area.

The crucial bridge connects the area with many villages falling in Imam Sahab tehsil.

According to the residents, the bridge was damaged more than a year ago and is yet to be repaired.

“Trucks carrying fruit cross the broken bridge during this season, putting their lives at risk,” said Raja Zaid, a university student.

The residents have appealed to the authorities to construct a new bridge immediately.

Lack of drinking water irks Chitragam residents

The residents of Chitrgam village are facing hardship in the absence of piped water in the area.

Many residents said that the area had been deprived of safe drinking water for years and they were forced to drink the contaminated water of streams.

“Due to the consumption of impure water, a threat of water-borne diseases looms large over the area,” said Mubashir Ahmad Bhat, a local.

Bhat said that many residents use the water from tube wells. However, he said that the water was unsafe for consumption.

Bhat said that they brought the issue to the notice of the concerned authorities many times, but nothing had been done so far. He also said that the area witnesses an erratic power supply.

“The unscheduled power cuts have always remained an unresolved issue in the area,” Bhat said.

He said that the power supply witnessed a further drop during the frosty winters.
