SMC employees call off strike

Employees at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Friday evening called off their indefinite strike after authorities assured them to redress their grievances.

The employees including ward officers and field staff wenton strike on Thursday to demand increasing man power, making available allnecessary equipments to sanitation teams, stop gap arrangements and otherdemands.

   

The strike severely affected the sanitation in the summercapital with garbage spilled on streets.

Agitating employees, however, said they were left with nochoice as their demands had not been met. As part of their agitation, employeesheld a protest at SMC lawns. Later in the day, authorities invited agitatingemployees for talks and assured them redressal of grievances and meeting of all”genuine demands.”

The meeting was attended by acting president SMC EmployeesUnion Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, president SMC Field Staffers, Choudhary Mehraj-ul-DinBujja, SMC Transport Union Fayaz Ahmad Mir, chairman Municipal Employees UnionGhulam Muhammad Solina, Nazir Ahmad Khan, Mudasir Ahmad and Nazir Ahmad Munshi.
