Sonamarg, Oct 27: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway reopened for traffic on Wednesday after remaining suspended for five days following the season’s first snowfall on Saturday.
An official told Greater Kashmir that after improvement in weather, Project Vijayak and Beacon of the Border roads organisation pressed its men and machinery into service to clear the road of the 2-3 ft of snow which had accumulated at Zojila and Meenamarg areas of Drass along the highway.
He said that a one-way traffic from Kargil to Srinagar was allowed to clear the stranded vehicles including passenger vehicles and trucks. The official said that the priority will be to clear all the stranded vehicles on either side before allowing any fresh traffic movement on the highway.
DySP Traffic Ganderbal, Mehraj ud Din Raina along with police and beacon officials had been deployed to monitor the traffic restoration at Zojila.
Meanwhile, as per the traffic department, one-way traffic from Srinagar towards Kargil will be allowed on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road on Thursday.
As per the traffic advisory for tomorrow, LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg (up traffic) from 0730 till 1630 hours after which no vehicle shall be allowed.
