BSF man ‘killed by Pak sniper’ on his birthday

A Border Security Force (BSF) man was killed by a Pakistani sniper on Wednesday along the International Border in Samba area of Jammu, triggering a heavy gun-battle between the forces of the two countries.

The deceased, head constable RP Hazra, was injured in the sniper fire at around 4.15 pm at Chak Dulma post in Hiranagar subsector of Samba district. He was taken to the district hospital where he died of his injuries.

“The trooper was from Murshidabad in West Bengal. He was 51 years old and had been with the BSF for 27 years. Presently he was posted with the 173rd battalion of the BSF. It was RP Hazra’s birthday today,” a BSF official said.

He said that India retaliated the fire, which was on when this report was filed.

Although the exchange of gunfire between the forces of the two countries has escalated along the Line of Control in Rajouri-Poonch districts during the past few days, the International Border along Samba district had been peaceful generally.
